Always the Baker, Never the Bride by Sandra D. Bricker

Emma Rae Travis works for one of the hottest bakeries in the Atlanta suburbs— though having type 1 diabetes means she’s not able to sample her delicious desserts as often as she’d like. After she meets Jackson Drake, owner of the soon-to-be-opened Tanglewood Hotel, she sees the chance to live her dream by running the show as his star pastry chef … if only he didn’t seem so put-off by all her hazelnut suggestions! But with the opening fast approaching, desperate times call for desperate measures, and what starts as a business relationship of convenience just might turn into something more.

There’s perhaps nothing more frustrating than reading a book that describes the most tantalizing dishes—usually desserts—in supreme detail on page after page, and knowing that those perfect bites will never be found out in the wild. Usually no slice of cake or decadent petit four is ever as good as their mouthwatering literary descriptions.

Usually.

And yet author Sandra Bricker has managed to whip up a cast of characters so sweet, so rich that they take center stage even when combating for attention against dreamlike pastries. Emma, baker extraordinaire, takes charge, constantly radiating a light and winning attitude. She’s strong and knows exactly what she wants, even though that’s sometimes complicated by Jackson. Their relationship starts rocky, perhaps because they’re so similar in their professional capacities, and Bricker expertly plays up their worst habits— that are really only grating for each other, not others. The result is a smoothly developed pair who easily play off of each other.

Beyond the early baking of a relationship is the push and pull of starting a hotel while managing family. This creates more than enough problems for Emma and Jackson as the two navigate party planning, a gaggle of overbearing sisters, and parents who can’t be left alone together. Quirks abound, and while this leads to some tension, the overall feeling remains light like a perfect mousse.

Snappy writing, thoughtful characters, and a lot of heart are whisked together to form a delightful treat.
